Aberbeeg celebrates its 100 year anniversary

In June 2022 Aberbeeg Hospital in Abertillery celebrated its 100th anniversary.

The day was marked with the grand opening of Air Wave, the new patient led café run for by the people supported at the service.  Air Wave also offers a permanent home to Aberbeeg Radio with its own purpose-built studio.  A sunny evening allowed for performances by Beaufort Male Choir along with The Abertillery Town Brass Band.  Patients, families and the people we support all enjoyed the performances with some lovely well-wishing messages from local neighbours.  The Air Wave building will shortly be painted using Six Bells Red, a unique paint made from the iron oxide pigment which is naturally found in the mine water waste. Turning Landscape, the organisation who have developed the paint, explained that the pigment is naturally sourced from the mine below Aberbeeg which collapsed in the 1960s.
