Chadwick Lodge has been rated as ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission

Specialist mental health service Chadwick Lodge has been graded as ‘good’ in all areas following its latest CQC inspection.

The service’s approach to co-production was positively noted in the report, as was the attention paid to people’s physical health and well-being, with inspectors stating: “They (the staff team) ensure that patients have good access to physical healthcare and support them to live healthier lives.”

Care plans for people supported at the service were, the report said, “personalised, holistic and recovery-oriented” and people were treated with “kindness, dignity and compassion’.

Families of the people supported at the service told inspectors that they “felt involved in their (their loved ones’) care and treatment” and that they felt their family members were safe being cared for at Chadwick Lodge. Patients said they felt the staff team were “caring” and “supportive”.

The hospital’s approach to co-production was praised by inspectors who said: “Patients attended a co-production meeting, led by an occupational therapist, where they could get involved in community audits, meal plans and plans to improve the hospital.

“Patients told us they were involved in their care plans, which were created with a multi-agency approach. Patients told us they have a gym and a kitchen for independent cooking. The music room had a drum kit, there was a multi-faith room, an activities room, and a horticulture room. When the on-site café opens there will be opportunities for patients to have paid work.”

Chadwick Lodge, in Eaglestone, Milton Keynes provides male and female forensic secure, female long stay rehabilitation and male acute admission services for patients with mental health needs, who may also have related issues such as substance misuse. It also offers care and treatment to patients with a dual diagnosis of mental illness/personality disorder and mild learning disabilities.

Hospital Director Charlotte May said: “We take a whole-team approach to supporting people at Chadwick Lodge and I am incredibly proud of the role everyone has played, across every profession and department, in helping us achieve ‘good’ across all areas of inspection.

“The people we support, their loved ones and our team collaborate closely to shape the service and make sure the care and support we provide is person-centred and focused on recovery and it is fantastic to see everyone’s hard work recognised in this way.”
