It’s National Inclusion Week, an event dedicated to celebrating inclusion and taking action to build inclusive workplaces. As part of marking this important week, we spoke with Colin Riddell, Chair of Elysium’s LGBTQIA+ Employee Resource Group, United By Pride. He told us about attending Manchester Pride, how people can get involved in the group and its work, and its exciting plans for the future.

“United By Pride was formed as an ERG just over two years ago, and we are Elysium’s LGBTQIA+ Employee Resource Group.
“We attended Manchester Pride last year, representing Elysium, and we decided that we would do the same this year, having a spot in the parade. The idea of taking part in events such as Pride as Elysium is that it shows, as a company, we are representing the LGBTQIA+ community and that we are part of things, we don’t just ‘talk the talk’.
“It’s an opportunity to show that we are an inclusive employer, and it’s also good for the people we support to see that we are inclusive, we are supportive and we are active.
“It’s also a chance for people to see our work in ‘action’, as it were. We have conversations about policy changes and terminology changes, but this is a visible way for us to show our commitment to inclusivity. It shows very visually that Elysium is supporting people.
“We had a vehicle and decorated it, and our group handed out information and really got involved. It was hard work – it was very busy – but it was great to be involved and share messages about Elysium. It was fun, but very tiring at the same time!
“Going forward, we are looking at other Pride events where we can get involved, such as Leeds and others in the Southern region, so more people can take part more easily.
“In the next couple of months, we are planning events and activities for National Coming Out Day on October 11th. We’re hoping to share some lived experiences and interviews with colleagues as part of our activities on that day. In November, there is Trans Awareness Week from the 13th, and we are hoping to get involved with that event too.
“As well as our ERG meetings, we also regularly have Coffee and Chat drop-in events – those are for everyone to join. They’re very informal and offer help virtually. People can find links and information about those on the intranet. Everyone is welcome – the more people who get involved, the better!
“We have our regular ERG community meetings too and it’s a great chance for people to get involved. Again, details are on the intranet for colleagues who want to join us. It’s a great platform for being part of a group which can make effective change and offer support.”
