Jamie Devine, Social Activities Co-Ordinator, on the Benefits of Fishing for Mental and Physical Health

The power and impact of being in and around green space – and the benefits for mental and physical health – were very much evident for a group of people supported at Victoria Gardens recently when they enjoyed a fishing trip to Partridge Lakes.

The service’s Social Activities Co-Ordinator, Jamie Devine, shares why trips such as these are so important, and far more than simply a ‘fishing’ trip.

Tell us more about the trip.

We had an incredible opportunity for people supported at Victoria Gardens to go on a fishing trip at the beautiful Partridge Lakes. But it was more than just a day of casting lines and reeling in fish; it was about fostering connections, building confidence, and enjoying the therapeutic benefits that nature has to offer.

Why is it so important for people to be out in nature?

Research shows that time spent in blue (close to water) or green spaces has a really positive impact on many different aspects of their lives, including physical and mental health. We try to arrange as many opportunities for people to be out in green or blue spaces as we can. We also encourage people to spend time just simply outdoors in gardens, or where it’s right for them, in the community. That might be through litter picking in the community, gardening, or simply relaxing outdoors.

And why fishing?

Fishing is known for its calming effects, and this visit was no exception. We all experienced the mental health benefits of fishing for many reasons. It’s a peaceful escape and encourages mindfulness and relaxation. We were connected with nature and really appreciated the beauty around us.

There’s also the social interaction of fishing. We saw friendships blossom as people shared laughter, stories and fishing tips. That’s so important for mental wellbeing.

There’s a real sense of accomplishment, too, whether that’s from catching a fish or simply enjoying the day outdoors.
And fishing encourages patience and focus, which is a great way to practice mindfulness and improve focus. Something everyone benefits from!
