Welcome to

St Mary’s Hospital

St Mary’s Hospital provides care and support for men aged 18 years and over who require a period of specialised Level 2 mental health rehabilitation inpatient services (higher support needs) in a safe and caring environment. The hospital also offers specialised services for people with an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) in a rehabilitation setting.

There is also an acute service which specialises in the assessment, treatment and stabilisation of individuals in crisis or suffering from significant mental health problems.

More information about St Mary's Hospital

The team at St Mary’s work in partnership with those we support and their families to meet the complex needs of those who present with cognitive, behavioural and emotional difficulties, and those struggling with mental health problems whose behaviours could be seen as challenging to services.

Rehabilitation service

The aims of the service are in line with the World Health Organisation International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (2013) recommendations, NICE guidance for Head Injury (2014) and the evidence base for modern Neurorehabilitation (Evans, 2019).

Cavendish Ward is a 13-bed ward that supports men aged 18 and over with an ABI and/or a diverse mixture of medical, physical, sensory, cognitive, communication, behavioural and social problems.

These may include neuropsychological impairment, challenging behaviour, forensic history, risk to themselves or others, and co-morbid mental health conditions which do not require secure services but require more intensive rehabilitation.

Support we offer

The service strives to deliver a trauma-informed approach and to be aware of the complexities and nuances of every patient’s presentation.

The clinical team will explore long-standing patterns of thinking and behaviour and consider how to empower each patient to adapt and manage their presenting issues. Therapeutic interventions are paced according to everyone’s needs, level of insight and ability, to ensure patients are not overwhelmed by their experiences, by the potential for change or become further distressed or traumatised from it.

A variety of treatments are offered to address cognitive, affective, interpersonal and situational factors contributing to the patient’s situation and to enhance recovery.

Acute service

St Mary’s acute service is a rapid-response, acute inpatient service for men. The service accepts emergency admissions for people who are in crisis and who cannot be cared for safely in the community. The service aims to provide a stabilising environment, working with individuals in periods of crisis and acute phases of their mental illness in the least restrictive setting.

We accept referrals and admit individuals 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and provide full medical, clinical and therapeutic packages including pharmacological interventions when required.

Support we offer

The service aims to provide a stabilising environment, working with individuals in periods of crisis and acute phases of their mental illness in the least restrictive setting. Our service is supported by a full Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) consisting of a Consultant Psychiatrist, Speciality Doctor, Registered Nurses, Healthcare Workers, a Clinical Psychologist, Assistant Psychologist and Occupational Therapist, who all offer a recovery-focused approach. The team work together with service users, developing person-centred care plans to provide stability and a pathway of care back to the community.

Environment

The hospital layout enables staff to deliver care within a low stimulus and spacious environment.

The building offers en-suite single bedrooms, occupational therapy suites, multi-sensory spaces and an IT suite. There are activity workshop spaces, horticultural facilities, a service user café and a gym with a qualified instructor. St Mary’s Hospital also offers staffed transport in order that service users can access home leave, community activities and off-site therapy sessions.

Community-based facilities and activities include college placements, vocational training, fitness and wellbeing events, and libraries and museums. Local shops and amenities play an important part in skills training for patients to learn how to plan and budget for living more independently.
