A school which supports young people while they receive hospital treatment has been described as ‘life-changing’ by regulator Ofsted.
Rhodes Wood Hospital School, Hatfield, was rated outstanding in all areas by Ofsted inspectors who described it as ‘in every sense an incredible place’, where pupils receive a ‘first-class education’.
The school supports young people who are being treated for an eating disorder at Rhodes Wood Hospital, part of Elysium Healthcare.

Inspectors noted: “When pupils join, they are facing a tough time. Some are seriously unwell. Joining the school, though, is life-changing for pupils. They receive a first-class education. Coupled with the stunning array of personal development opportunities, they are skilfully guided to piece things back together.
“Their lives are gradually filled with happiness and hope as they achieve more and more.”
Pupils at the school, the report noted, learn ‘extremely well’ and are supported ‘exceptionally well’ by the staff team, with inspectors stating: “Pupils are guided superbly well to build their self-esteem, confidence and resilience. Rich and varied wider opportunities provide meaningful experiences for pupils to make a real difference to their lives and the lives of others.”
There was praise also for the ‘meticulous’ work the team at Rhodes Wood do as a result of which, inspectors said, children learn ‘exceptionally well’. Almost all pupils at the school continue to follow their ‘home’ school curriculum, and the ‘high quality’ work of staff at Rhodes Wood means the transition is ‘seamless’.
Pupils are supported in their studies for GCSEs and A Levels. Inspectors praised the school’s highly bespoke curriculum, which ensures pupils learn what they need to help them successfully transition back into their ‘home’ school when they leave the hospital school. Alongside academic subjects, the school’s PSHE, careers and rich and meaningful opportunities to explore their individual interests were also praised.
Head Teacher at Rhodes Wood School, Michelle Fennell-Bergin, said: “We are, of course, delighted with the findings of our latest Ofsted report and that the hard work of the pupils and the team has been recognised in this way.
“We strive to always improve, and there are always areas where we can and want to do better. We have very high aspirations for the students of Rhodes Wood. It is not just about them coming in through the door and going to school; we want to build their confidence, their resilience and be part of a community in a safe space.”
