Emerald Place Clinic

Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Elysium Healthcare are working in partnership to provide a mental health inpatient service for young people in Surrey and surrounding areas in a purpose-built unit. Emerald Place Clinic is available solely for NHS funded care and treatment and the partnership brings together complementary expertise and best practice to jointly manage the inpatient unit and deliver a high-quality service for young people.

More information about Emerald Place Clinic

Emerald Place Clinic is a general adolescent inpatient unit for the care and treatment of young people aged 12 up to the age of 18.  Young people who are admitted to the unit will have a primary diagnosis of mental illness across a wide range of disorders and complex needs. These could include mental health conditions such as mood disorders and acute psychosis.  Additionally, young people may have co-existing additional needs such as neurodevelopmental disorders, including mild learning disabilities or autism. A young person could also be admitted if they have disordered eating.

Environment

Emerald Place Clinic is situated in Charlwood, Surrey.  It is a purpose built, well-equipped environment which provides 12 individual ensuite bedrooms including a 2-bed Extra Care Area (ECA), a variety of lounge and recreational spaces, therapy room, sensory room, Occupational Therapy (OT) kitchen and a well-resourced school.

In addition to the internal space there is an attractive courtyard garden and a pleasant outdoor green space, which is available for use by visitors to the service and to facilitate escorted Section 17 leave.

Approach

At Emerald Place, each young person is supported by a dedicated Clinical Psychologist and offered weekly sessions tailored to their needs, using evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and trauma-focused approaches. Alongside individual work, group interventions like relaxation and DBT skills groups are provided, with specialist assessments available for autism, learning disabilities, and cognitive functioning. Parents are also supported through focused CBT sessions, while art therapy offers creative expression for those less comfortable with talking therapies. A skilled OT team complements this care, helping young people build daily living, coping, and sensory skills through structured activities.

Education

There is an Ofsted registered independent school onsite which offers education from Key Stage 3 (KS3) through to GCSE and A-levels. The education team enables young people to continue with their schooling whilst receiving treatment, in partnership with their local school and education authority. The education team will liaise with the young person’s current school or college and will set work or support the young person with any work sent.
